ALHR - Happy International Human Rights Day
10/12/2010
Hello Victorian ALHR members and happy international human rights day!
Today, 10 December, marks the anniversary of the adoption by the UN General Assembly of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. Let us use today to reflect on how far we have come vis-a-vis the respect, protection and promotion of human rights. And to reflect on what we as individuals and as an organisation can do to ensure the continued primacy of human rights in Australia, and to confront and prevent human rights violations wherever they occur.
Remember: despite the silly season, there are still many ways to contribute to human rights promotion and protection this year, and in the new year. Here are some examples:
1. Melbourne PEN Annual Card Writing Evening;
2. All Equal Pay Supporters Rally;
3. Foundation House - Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture - End of Year Celebration;
4. ANZSIL International Economic Law Research Symposium (2011);
5. Australian Institute of Criminology - Young People, Risk and Resilience Alcohol, Drugs & Violence Conference (2011);
6. Institute of Global Law & Policy 2nd Annual Workshop (2011);
7. 19th Annual ANZSIL International Law Conference - The Promise and Limits of International Law (2011).
1. Melbourne PEN Annual Card Writing Evening - Tuesday, 14 December, 7pm
Melbourne PEN invites you to an evening of card writing. The cards are sent to fellow writers who have been imprisoned for speaking their minds. A letter of support will be sent to Liu Xiaobo (2010 Nobel Peace Prize winner) and be available for signing.
This is a powerful act of solidarity which involves writers who refuse to be silenced all over the world (fitting having regard to what is happening to Julian Assange). Show your support for the many writers who will be spending the festive season imprisoned or in exile.
