1. Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation (ANTAR (Vic)), Various Dates and Volunteer Opportunities, Rowville, Reservoir and Ballarat
ANTAR (Vic) seek volunteers to assist with a number of upcoming indigenous reconciliation and cultural events. These include:
- Stall hosts for the Stringybark Suburban Sustainability Festival, Saturday and Sunday, 16 and 17 October, Rowville Community Centre, Rowville;
- Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association (VACSAL) Junior Netball and Football Carnival this Friday, 24 September, Darebin Community Sport Centre, Reservoir; and
- Ballarat Victorian Aboriginal Youth Sport And Reconciliation (VAYSAR) Statewide Senior Football Netball Carnival, Friday, 1 October to Sunday, 3 October, North Ballarat Football Club, Creswick Road, Ballarat.

2. Training Course on Economic, Social and Cultural (ESC) Rights, 8 to 12 November 2010, Geneva
The Project on ESC Rights at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights is accepting applications for a new training course on understanding ESC rights. The course program will cover the following:
- history of ESC rights; Content and scope;
- violations and justiciability; Monitoring progressive realization;
- ESC rights mechanisms (international, regional, national);
- remedies for violations of ESC rights (litigation, domestic courts, regional bodies, UN Special Procedures, UNiversal periodic review);
- substantive cases on the right to food, the right to housing, the right to education, the right to health, the right to water, and other ESC rights; and
- discussions with experts, including UN treaty bodies members; visit to a session of the CESCR.
The course will run in parallel with the November session of the Committee on ESC Rights to allow course participants to observe the Committee in session (to the extent permitted). It is designed for human rights professionals from small and medium-sized organisations (including, in particular, NGOs and national human rights institutions), UN agencies or diplomatic missions who wish to include ESC rights in their activities. 3. Peoples Assembly in Canberra, Opening of Parliament, Tuesday, 28 September 2010, Canberra
The Refugee Advocacy Network (RAN) invite you to join it and other refugee and asylum seeker action and support groups at the opening of Parliament on Tuesday, 28 September 2010. RAN will assemble on the lawns outside Parliament House to call on Australias new Parliament to introduce humane refugee policies. Refugee groups and supporters are encouraged to bring along banners featuring the key messages of the gathering.

4. International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) - Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity Project Intern, October 2010 Onwards, Geneva
The ICJ is a worldwide network of judges and lawyers united in affirming international law and rule of law principles that advance human rights. It is currently seeking an intern for 6 months from October 2010 (depending on receipt of work permit from Swiss authorities) to work for its Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity Project (SOGIP) at the International Secretariat in Geneva.
SOGIP uses human rights law to protect individuals from discrimination based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity. SOGIP seeks to achieve this goal through advocacy at the UN and other international and regional human rights bodies, strategic legal interventions, capacity-building and training, research and publications.
The Intern must be able to:
- identify, gather, analyse and summarise national court decisions relating to sexual orientation and gender identity for a forthcoming publication;
- translate and summarise Spanish-language decisions;
- arrange for translations from other languages;
- assist with drafting legal opinions and UN advocacy;
- assist with maintaining databases of contacts;
- oversee distribution of SOCIP legal materials;
- assist with SOGIP-related training events; and
- undertake tasks as required.
Successful candidate must have: high motivation and a demonstrated interest in human rights; experience in reading and analysing court decisions; an undergraduate or masters degree in law; fluency in English and Spanish; excellent research and writing skills; the ability to work as part of a team and to tight deadlines.
Note: the ICJ is not in a position to financially remunerate interns. Interns will be responsible for ALL expenses and costs incurred.

6. PILCH Law and Social Change Dialogue, Tuesday, 19 October 2010, Melbourne
Can lawyers change the world? What do Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Margaret Thatcher and Banjo Paterson have in common?
For decades, lawyers have called for justice in the courts and on the streets, often against great odds. Some do this using legal tools, working within legal systems. Others traverse beyond these traditional methods or abandon the law altogether. So do lawyers have the power to wield social change? Is this even their role?
PILCH invites you to explore these questions together with Simon Shiek (National Director GetUp! and Nic Frances (social entrepreneur and CEO of alternative energy company COOL NRG) at its inaugural Law and Social Change Dialogue.

8. Tides of Resilience - a photography exhibition about climate change in Bangladesh, 24 October til 18 November 2010, St Kilda
The Climate Advocacy Fund invites you to attend a photographic exhibition on climate change in Bangladesh.
The Exhibition Opening Night takes place at 4.00 til 6.00 pm on Sunday, 24 October at Obscura Gallery, 285 Carlisle Street, St Kilda East. The exhibition will continue to run at that venue until 18 November 2010.
Donations to assist with the cost of hiring gallery space and advertising are welcome.
10% of all print sales and all money raised towards the exhibition will be donated to Co-Operation in Development to build schools and to provide education in southern Bangladesh.

9. International Law Association (ILA) Asia-Pacific Regional Conference, 29 May til 1 June 2011, Taipei, Taiwan
The Chinese (Taiwan) Society of International Law is hosting the ILA Asia-Pacific Regional Conference in Taipei, Taiwan, from 29 May to 1 June 2011.
The conference theme is "Contemporary International Law Issues in the Asia Pacific: Opportunities and Challenges." Papers are invited for the Third Biennial Conference of the Asian Society of International Law (the Conference) to be held in Beijing on Saturday and Sunday, 27 and 28 August 2010. 12. ALHR and Aussies Against Capital Punishment End Capital Punishment Day Dinner, Friday, 8 October 2010, Brisbane
ALHR has combined with Aussies Against Capital Punishment (AACP) to bring David Marr to Brisbane for World Day Against the Death Penalty. David will speak at a dinner jointly hosted by ALHR and AACP at the Rydges South Bank Hotel, 9 Glenelg Street, Brisbane on 8 October 2010.
AACP was set up by Lee and Chris Rush, the parents of Australian, Scott Rush, who is facing capital punishment in Indonesia.
The evening will provide an excellent forum and opportunity to network with other ALHR members and professionals who are active and interested in human rights law and practise.

*What is the International Day of Peace?
In 1981, the UN General Assembly (the GA) declared that the opening day of its regular session in September "shall be officially dedicated and observed as the International Day of Peace and shall be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples." Ten years later, the GA resolved by resolution 55/282 that commencing in 2002, the International Day of Peace shall be observed on 21 September each year. The International Day of Peace is now observed annually as a day of global peace, ceasefire and non-violence.

12. ALHR and Aussies Against Capital Punishment End Capital Punishment Day Dinner, Friday, 8 October 2010, Brisbane
ALHR has combined with Aussies Against Capital Punishment (AACP) to bring David Marr to Brisbane for World Day Against the Death Penalty. David will speak at a dinner jointly hosted by ALHR and AACP at the Rydges South Bank Hotel, 9 Glenelg Street, Brisbane on 8 October 2010.
AACP was set up by Lee and Chris Rush, the parents of Australian, Scott Rush, who is facing capital punishment in Indonesia.
The evening will provide an excellent forum and opportunity to network with other ALHR members and professionals who are active and interested in human rights law and practise.

*What is the International Day of Peace?
In 1981, the UN General Assembly (the GA) declared that the opening day of its regular session in September "shall be officially dedicated and observed as the International Day of Peace and shall be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples." Ten years later, the GA resolved by resolution 55/282 that commencing in 2002, the International Day of Peace shall be observed on 21 September each year. The International Day of Peace is now observed annually as a day of global peace, ceasefire and non-violence.
