ALHR National Newsletter April + Annual Dinner just around the corner!

23/04/2013
It's been a busy time in ALHR, and here's a brief overview of what's happening.

The first thing is to again thank Stephen Keim for his three excellent years as President of ALHR. His leadership saw the organisation really grow in membership, output and geographical spread. So much so that we now have the first President located west of the Great Dividing Range (although I'm not sure whether that's a valid entry in the Guinness Book of Records!).

What is a more noteworthy 'first' is the ALHR annual dinner with guest speaker, Dan Mori. Dan is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the US military and represented Guantanamo Bay detainees including Australian citizen David Hicks. The ALHR dinner is 3 May in Sydney. The details are below with a link for booking and these are also on ALHR's web page.

Other matters of note include:
* Annual Dinner
* ALHR priorities and events for 2013
* Vice President - Nathan Kennedy
* Recent submissions/activities
* Report of 2013 AGM

ALHR priorities and events for 2013

ALHR's national committee met in Brisbane on 13-14 April to review and plan the organisation's work. A key element informing this was the 2012 members' survey in which people said they wanted more ALHR events they could join and easier ways to interact and get involved in ALHR work. More details from the planning weekend will follow, but here are some key things which 2013 will hold.

Welcoming our new Vice President, Nathan Kennedy

At the AGM, the membership agreed on an amendment of ALHR's constitution to have a new position of Vice President. The position was not filled at the AGM, and on 13 April 2013 the national committee unanimously accepted Nathan Kennedy as ALHR's first Vice President.

Recent submissions and press releases

In between our scheming and planning for the year to come, we've still been busy with our advocacy and submissions work. Click below to read how we've contributed to the public debate on the Anti-Discrimination Bill, justice reinvestment in criminal law and the right to silence in New South Wales.

Report of the 2012 AGM

The minutes and reports from the AGM will shortly be available on ALHR's website.
The meeting noted the excellent work of everyone who had contributed to ALHR events and writing during the year. Particular thanks was paid to Edwina McDonald and Liz Snell who developed ALHR's submissions procedure and have passed the baton on for 2013. If we keep the pace as fast and as strong as these two, we're set for a great 2013!
