A new approach still needed for asylum seeker policy

ALHR has made a number of submissions to Parliamentary inquiries regarding asylum seekers, most recently the Senate Inquiry into the Malaysia arrangement. The final report of this inquiry was tabled in the Senate in October, and, unsurprisingly, in the wake of the High Court's historic decision, recommended that the arrangement not be proceeded with. The report notes the overwhelming opposition to the arrangement as reflected in the submissions, and mentions our submission several times.
It has been an oftimes disheartening year for those advocating a more humane, sensible, and - well - legally sound approach to asylum seekers, but there have been some wins along the way. Sincere thanks and appreciation for those who have worked on this and our other submissions, particularly Eve Lester and Matthew Zagor.
If you are interested in reading a highly sensible, human and sound articulation of a better approach to asylum seeker policy, I again recommend taking a look at the report by centrist think-tank the Centre for Policy Development: A New Approach: Breaking the Stalemate on Refugees and Asylum Seekers. Released 3 months ago just days before the High Court decision, it is as prescient today. I commented on this report, and the nature of the political mud wrestle more generally, in my latest column for Brisbane Legal.
